FOURTEEN

Ashe

Covering my face, I fell into a crouch, panting hard. We’d been searching for Sydney for six days. SIX. DAYS.

I was useless and no closer to finding her. I could feel her, but it was muted as if I stood on the North Pole with a compass.

Durand and Edgor had set up a grid and had teams searching the city. I was assigned shifts, but couldn’t keep myself from wandering the town at other times. I held out hope that if I got close enough, I’d feel her.

I hadn’t eaten, and I’d barely slept.

This separation was far worse than before. I was struggling to hold myself together. The only thing keeping me sane was my training and hope. Eondian, Aaraeth, and I could feel her. She was alive and conscious but dosed with something. I didn’t feel much through the bond, but at least I didn’t feel any pain or anger.

Someone cleared their throat, and I looked up to see Durand standing in the street before me. His arms were crossed, and his feet were spread wide as he watched me.

“What?” I growled.

“Go back to the hotel and sleep. You look like shit,” he told me impassively.

Eondian growled in my head, We can’t sleep until she’s found. Durand should be helping!

I agreed, letting anger fill me. Leaping to my feet, I spat, “You need to go back to Arthur and get information. You know he has something to do with this. He always knows more than he tells us.”

The trees on either side of the county road where we had stopped seemed to absorb my voice.

Durand frowned. “Ashe, you aren’t thinking clearly.”

“No, I’m not, and I can’t until we find Sydney. But I wonder how you can protect Arthur after everything he’s done? Even you know something’s wrong with this situation.” I shouted.

“Maybe, and that’s why I’m here. But the fact is that she’s believed to be a runaway.”

“By who?” I snapped.

“That’s the official statement from Briony, and it very well could be true.” He turned in a half-circle. “What’s more likely? That she was kidnapped or that she drugged you and ran away?” he asked unemotionally.

“No! She did not leave me! I know her!” I roared. “Maybe you need to take a step away from Briony and think about Arthur’s motives.” I paced the road, kicking at the gravel. “Fuck!”

“I’m not your enemy. I want to find her just as badly as you.” He threw his arms up in surrender. “What do you want me to do?”

“The Archambault family has her. Why don’t we demand that they give her back?”

He sighed. “It’s more complicated than that.”

“Is it? Is it really? I’d be willing to bet that if we held a gun to their head, they’d give her up.” I knew they were foolish as I said the words, but I was desperate.

Frowning, Durand stared at me. “Look, I’m on your side, believe it or not. But we have to be careful. Both Zane and I brought teams here against orders.
